A Brief HistoryThe High Cross Inn has been serving beer for the best part of 190 years. In 1820, it was known as the High Cross farmhouse, and was significantly smaller than it is today, with various additions incorporating the barn into the main building and extensions made over the years (the photos below outline some of these changes). What was true then (thanks to the Beer Act - legalising the brewing of beer for home consumption or sale) as it is today was that the High Cross served teas & beer to visitors to the Duddon Valley area. There have been a number of licensees at the High Cross since then, the newest and current encumbent is Angela Anthonisz, who took over in May 2009. Nowadays the High Cross Inn prides itself in provinding flexibility in the provision of food, drink and accommodation to visitors whatever the purpose of their visit may be. Located on the outskirts of Broughton-in-Furness, conveniently placed on the A595 the High Cross is ideal for those passing through on their way to other parts, for those looking for a convenient meeting place or for those wishing to enjoy the delights of the Duddon Valley and the south lakes in a more leisurely manner. |
